Machelle has practiced law locally and internationally for almost 20 years and has an all-encompassing experience in Family Law, Real Estate, Wills and Estates, and Environmental Law.

She grew up in South Africa where she obtained her BA Law and BA LLB degrees with 14 distinctions from a premium law university. In doing so she attained a place on the Dean’s Honour List. While practicing as a senior associate at a top-tier national firm for several years, she decided to further her studies, and in 2012 obtained her LLM degree in Environmental Law.

Machelle has joined West Legal in the capacity of Family Law Associate and focuses on contested and uncontested divorces and separations (ranging from no conflict to high conflict), matters pertaining to parenting, child support, division of property, and spousal support. Her practice includes child welfare, guardianship, and adoptions. She has extensive experience in both Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench.

She approaches all her cases from the viewpoint that children and their wellbeing are most important and so always aims to first and foremost find an amicable solution for her clients with the child’s best interests at heart. Being a mother herself, it comes naturally to her to empathize with her clients and help guide them through their trying experiences. She firmly believes that everybody should have a right to legal representation and therefore also avails herself to Legal Aid clients.

Machelle has a passion for the environment and has volunteered on several different not-for-profit organizations, including serving as a board member of CEP (Connecting Environmental Professionals) in Calgary.

When Machelle is taking a break from her work, she prefers to spend her time with her family roaming the great outdoors. She’s an avid hiker and when she can do it in close proximity to the ocean, you won’t be able to keep a smile from her face.
